Climbing in Ao Nang Thailand
Chong Phli - Spirit Mountain
This is the best climbing spot in Ao Nang- it is really good and there are routes going up all the time. The only down side is that it is a morning crag, with sun in the afternoon on the main wall. The good news is that there are some new areas which are shady in the afternoon.
There is very peaceful accommodation right next to the crag- it really does not get more convenient then this! There is not much around the crag within walking distance, but you will probably have rented a scooter- so the whole mess which is Ao Nang is your oyster so to speak...
Best to check the Crag for route info as there is new stuff going up all the time- There are also topos in the guide books, but these may be a little out of date....
North Wall
This is the newest quality crag around and a kinda secret... It is great and in the shade all day. The routes are excellent and well bolted. I would say that the easier stuff (under 6c) is a little stiff for the Thai grades- add an extra + to manage expectations and ego. Above 6c the grades are very fair. It is also in the middle of Ao Nang. There are quite a few tiny mosquitos- but these are easily manageable with coils and spray.
Below are some beautiful hand drawn topos, but there is more stuff going up here all the time.
My favorite has to be the amazing multipitch ???? of the Western World-6c... The first 6b pitch up the ladder is hard and nothing special, but the second 6c is a real gem- giving Humanality a run for it's money! Please be very careful on the belay ledge of what looks like a pile of loose rubble- if you look very closely you will see it is actually a fosilised ants nest, complete with fossilized leaves! Very cool but very delicate...
The Crag also has limited info. Sorry for the lack of pics- I was too busy climbing!
